History
GOOD HOPE BAPTIST CHURCH
The Good Hope Baptist Church traces its origins to the Ebenezer Baptist Church, Round Hill. During the slavery era, there were no established African-American churches in the area where people of color were legally held in bondage. Slaves worshipped with their owners at Ebenezer (now known as Round Hill Baptist Church).
After the emancipation of the slaves, some of the ancestors expressed a desire to have a place of worship of their own. In 1867, about twenty-five of them united to find a place. Their first place of worship was a bush harbor at a site just below Spy Hill known as Maringo.
In June of 1868, a kind and sympathetic gentleman, Colonel Thomas B. Baber, deeded an acre of land to be used for the colored Baptist church. The church took as its name Good Hope Baptist Church and began to worship on the site. This was the first organized church for people of color in King George County, VA. Worship continued in a bush harbor until 1872 when the first frame building was constructed. Since that time, many improvements have been made to the building and more acreage has been acquired.
